November 13th SAAA meeting

We held our annual Christmas Party at Macatawa Bay Planetarium from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Larry presented the Rick Larson video “The Star of Bethlehem”.

January 7th Girl Scout program
SAAA presented a “Phases of the Moon” and Planetarium program for a Holland Girl Scout troop and a Brownie troop. The meeting took place at the Macatawa Bay Planetarium.

March 4th Women’s Enrichment Forum
SAAA has been asked to present an astronomy program for the Women’s Enrichment Forum on Thursday, March 4th, 2010. Meeting would take place at Macatawa Bay Planetarium, after our monthly board meeting.

Board Meeting Minutes - January 7, 2010

The executive board met briefly following the Girl Scout program on January 7th.

Membership Dues for 2010
Membership dues will be collected at the January 8th general meeting. Individual/family membership is $20. Junior and Senior discounts are available.

SAAA Communication - December 1, 2009

There was no board meeting this month, but the following was communicated to members of the board.

1) Girl Scout Program Rescheduled: The Girl Scout Program was canceled due to conflicts with extracurricular school functions on November 19th. It will be rescheduled sometime in January (confirmed: January 7th). Irma Tibbetts provided a list of dates that will work well without conflicts for school events in January.

2) Christmas Program: Larry Logsdon offered to bring a movie on the Star of Bethlehem for the Christmas program next Friday. The movie is approx. 1.5 hours long.

3) Cub Scout Program: We received an email from Pack 3033 who would like a program in the planetarium to help them with an Astronomy Belt Loop award. We are awaiting feedback from the scouts with proposal dates.

4) Adventure Club Program: The Adventure Club from Grand Haven Seventh Day Adventist Church is working on an Astronomy Award and requested a program in the planetarium. We are awaiting feedback from the Adventure Club with proposal dates.

5) Club Banner: Jim will contact Troy Best to obtain graphics for the Club Banner.

6) Payment from Park Township Received: Jim received a check ($84) from Park Township for our astronomy program in October. The check will be transferred to Peter at the upcoming December meeting.

2) Event Updates:

October 9th program for Park Township
We had a strong showing with many people registering the last two days, and some paying at the door. We split into two groups. Peter and Jim presented a planetarium show for both sessions. Frank led the other group on the “Pocket Solar System” scale model activity. George and Doug Sutherland helped out. Frank described different types of telescopes for the second session in the classroom.

October 16th Star Party at Vivekananda Monastery
This event at Vivekananda was cancelled, due to cloudy weather conditions.

October 24th Astronomy Day activities
This event at Curtis Center Park was cancelled, due to cloudy weather conditions.

October 8th setup for Park Township program
SAAA will meet at 6:00pm at Macatawa Bay Middle School to prepare for the October 9th program.

October 9th program for Park Township
We may need to split up into two groups. Peter will present a planetarium show for registered guests of Park Township. The other group will watch a pictorial of the Space Shuttle preparation procedures, and perform activities from previous Night Sky Network toolkits. This meeting will take the place of our regular October meeting. George will bring cider and a snack (to be reimbursed from revenue from this event).

Weather permitting.

October 24th Astronomy Day activities
Peter will contact Ross at Lumir Corp. to reserve Curtis Center Park for Astronomy Day activities on Saturday, October 24th. Please keep this date open to help at the park.

2) IYA2009 International Year of Astronomy
The viewing session scheduled for July 24/25 at Holland State Park was cancelled due to cloud cover both nights. The viewing session at Van Buren State Park was successfully held on Friday, August 14th. Six members and about 75 campers attended the presentation and viewing opportunity.

3) Cub Scout Astronomy Program
Club members met with Cub Scout pack 3043 at Hemlock Crossings County Park on Friday June 12th for an observing session.

New Business Items

1) Planning Future Meetings We discussed possible topics for upcoming meetings. Frank can contribute a video presentation of the Aurora Borealis. Peter mentioned that the Space quiz game is always popular. Jim suggested a work session to organize the materials at Macatawa Bay school.

2) $50 First Scope Peter suggested the club purchase a $50 First Scope, by Celestron. This scope is featured in the latest issue of Sky & Telescope magazine.

3) Planetarium/Building Permits for 2009-2010 School Year Jim submitted Facility Request forms to West Ottawa Public Schools for the 2009/2010 school year. Macatawa Bay MS will not be available April 09, 2010, due to Spring Break.

SAAA will meet to prepare for the October 9th program for Park Township

We will work through experiments from the latest Night Sky Network package (“Black Hole Survival Toolkit”), and review some of the previous toolkits. 2) IYA2009 International Year of Astronomy The board discussed these ways to celebrate IYA2009 in the community:
a) Peter will check into our hosting an outreach program with the Holland Museum.
b) Jim will contact Dave Cramer with Michigan State Parks to setup viewing sessions at Holland SP (July 20th?), Van Buren SP (Aug. 24th?).
c) We should also keep the Outdoor Discovery Center and DeGraaf Nature Center on our list of potential astronomy workshops using NSN toolkit resources.

3) SAAA Member List updates George will update and distribute this list, especially to Peter for the Astronomy League member updates.

New Business Items
1) Hemlock Crossings County Park Carson reported that this park is a great venue for our private Star Gazing sessions. Our first scheduled session on May 22nd was originally cancelled due to clouds and light rain, but skies cleared in time for some good viewing.

2) Moon Occultation of Antares Jim suggested that this event on Saturday, June 6th would be a good public outreach opportunity. Occultation would begin approximately 22:15, and finish around 23:30. On June 5th, Ross at Lumir Corp gave his approval for us to use Curtis Center Park (8th and College), even though it was very late notice. Unfortunately, clouds interfered with our viewing once again.

3) Next General Meeting on June 12th SAAA will meet with Cub Scout Pack 3043 at 8:00 PM at Hemlock Crossings County Park to work on their Astronomy Belt Loop and Merit Pins. Possible backup dates are June 13th, June 19th, and June 20th.

SAAA Board Minutes – April 30, 2009

The meeting took place on Thursday, April 30th at 84 East Restaurant and lasted from 5:30 p.m. until approximately 7:15 p.m.

1) Treasury Report: Account balance as of April 30th is $956.71.

2) Next General Meeting on May 8th SAAA will celebrate our 20th Anniversary at this meeting. Jim and Peter will work together to dig-up old email addresses to invite former club members. Peter will look for a videotape of a news spotlight of our Mars observing session from August, 2003. We will order a sheet-cake from Meijer’s Bakery with the SAAA logo.

3) Astronomy Day on May 2nd/ Tulip Time Fireworks On Friday May 1st Our Astronomy Day celebration will be postponed, due to Tulip Time conflicts on May 2-9.

4) IYA2009 International Year of Astronomy The board discussed these ways to celebrate IYA2009 in the community:

  1. Peter will check into our hosting an outreach program with the Holland Museum.
  2. Frank has researched several of the Ottawa County parks for suitable night viewing spots.
  3. Jim will wait until after Memorial Day to contact the State Parks to setup viewing sessions at Holland SP, Van Buren SP near South Haven, and possibly Warren Dunes SP in Bridgman.
  4. We should also keep the Outdoor Discovery Center and DeGraaf Nature Center on our list of potential astronomy workshops using NSN toolkit resources.

New Business Items
1) New members Michael Radakovitz and Douglas Sutherland have joined the SAAA, and their annual dues payments were transferred from Jim to Peter.

2) Planetarium status Jim reported that the main projector bulb in the Planetarium seems to be burnt-out. He contacted Dave Zimmer of Ottawa Public Schools, but did not received a reply. Update - at the May 8th meeting, we found the projector bulb was loose. Stars in the celestrial sphere are now working!

2) IYA2009 International Year of Astronomy
The board discussed ways to celebrate IYA2009 in the community. The following ideas have been proposed:

  1. Setup telescopes for public viewing of Saturn in the Spring
  2. Coincide public viewing of Saturn with 1st quarter Moon
  3. Work with local movie theatres to allow the club to setup telescopes on opening night of the new Star Trek movie
  4. Work with Ottawa County parks to authorize public viewing sessions. Suggested parks include: Rosey Mound, Kirk Park and Hemlock Park
  5. Work with Outdoor Discovery Center or DeGraaf Nature Center to co-sponsor astronomy workshops using NSN toolkit resources

Frank has volunteered to research dates for these events and will help contact the necessary authorities.

3) Next General Meeting on March 13th

  1. Award ceremony to reward those individuals who participated in five or more NSN events in 2008 with NSN award pins.
  2. Our comet chef, Peter Burkey, will build a comet out of dry ice, ammonia, corn syrup water and dirt.
  3. Training of the latest NSN toolkit titled: “Telescopes: Eyes on the Universe”

4) Astronomy Day on May 2nd/ Tulip Time Fireworks On Friday May 1st
We discussed celebrating Astronomy Day in Holland. May 2nd occurs during Tulip Time. The night of the fireworks display is Friday, May 1st. Peter suggested setting up telescopes near the entrance of Kollen Park. As the crowd leaves, we can provide views of Saturn and other objects.

New Business Items
1) Payment Received
Jim Reier received payment from Park Township for February’s “Tour of the Solar System” program. The check was transferred to the treasury in the amount of $92.00.

2) Messier Marathon
The Messier Marathon will be held on Friday March 27th and into the morning of March 28th.

3) 2009 Star Party Schedule to Vivekananda
Jim Reier prepared a letter to Vivekananda with the observing schedule for 2009. This letter will accompany our contribution to Vivekananda later in the month.

4) Sky & Telescope Magazine Subscriptions
Reminder to all club members who are renewing or wish to receive S&T magazine at the Astronomy League discount rate. You may renew your subscription online per the renewal notice received in the mail. New members wishing to start a subscription should contact our Treasurer, Peter Burkey.

We met on Monday February 5th at the 84 East Pasta. The meeting lasted from 5:30 p.m. until approximately 7:15 p.m.

1. The Jan. 30th preparation training for the Black River Science Olympiad went very well. This will be logged as our first Night Sky Event of 2009.

2. Planetarium maintenance-
A Wi-Fi data network has been added to the room, and works very well.
A dimmer switch has been installed to control the room lights.
The School will provide new stackable chairs, to replace the aging folding chairs.
*The Planetarium projector still has problems with several features.

3. Treasury report- Current account balance is $809.71

New Business Items

1. Recent but inactive SAAA members will be invited to the Feb. 13th Park Township program, with a reminder to renew their dues for 2009.

The Park Twp class will be split into two groups, which will rotate between:
-Planetarium: “Tour of the Solar System”.
-Classroom: Pocket Solar System project and a PowerPoint slide show by Larry Logsdon.

2. Peter inquired about obtaining dry ice, to build a model comet for public demonstrations.

3. George obtained a batch of SAAA brochures, and dropped them off at the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce. Additional brochures may be left at the Visitor and Convention Bureau.

4. SAAA Star Party is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Feb.27th at Vivekananda Monastery.

5. The March 13th SAAA meeting will explore the latest Night Sky Network program.

We met on Monday January 5th at the Crazy Horse Steakhouse. The meeting lasted from 5:30 p.m. until approximately 8:00 p.m.

1. Establish date/time/places for recurring monthly board meetings We decided the first Thursday of the month should work.

2. Brainstorm topics for general meetings through June 2009 Jim will contact potential guest speakers.

3. Discuss ideas for International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009) activities Mark suggested the upcoming pairing of crescent Venus and crescent Moon. We may be able to coordinate activities with Ottawa County Parks or DeGraaf Nature Center, as well as Tuesday night concerts at Kollen Park. We also discussed running a Public Service Announcement on local radio, and running an advert in the Community Events column of the Holland Sentinel or other paper. Have we left any of our flyers with the Holland Area Chamber of Commerce?

4. Club ALCOR representative and duties Peter volunteered for this Astronomy League position.

5. Payment schedule for 2009 Reviewed 2008 treasurer’s log for payments including Astronomical League, International Dark Sky Association, Vivekananda, S&T, and others

1. Treasury report $731.65 - Mark turned over the Treasury folder, notes and a cashier’s check for the account balance to Peter.

2. Prepare for February’s Park Township program “A Tour of the Solar System” We will begin with a Planetarium sky tour, followed by an activity, probably ending with a classroom discussion for the older guests.

3. What do we need to do to help Black River prepare for the Science Olympiad? No action on this item.

4. Planetarium maintenance and service assessment to Dave Zimmer Jim and Frank will meet with Dave and other School Board members Wednesday, Jan. 7th at 3:00 PM.

1/8/09 Update: Met with Dave Zimmer, Tom Winegar and Dave Daniels. (1) There will be a wireless access point added to the planetarium to access the internet. (2) A manual dimmer switch will be installed to control the dome lights. (3) All folding chairs will be replaced with stackable chairs. (4) Dave Daniels agreed to research a sound system in the planetarium to provide a microphone public address system and to play audio (CD player / AUX jacks, etc.) - J.Reier

Board Minutes – November 2, 2006

Treasurer’s Report: $ 517.96

Old Business

  1. Park Township Night. The October 19th presentation covering Deep Sky Objects went very well. Thanks to all who helped make it a success!
  2. Proceeds. Jim Reier is awaiting a check from Park Township containing admission proceeds from our Deep Sky Objects presentation.
  3. Planetarium training. Training for the new Planetarium console was held on September 27, 2006. In attendance were Peter Burkey, Jim Reier and Mark Logsdon along with science teachers from West Ottawa. A follow-up session occurred on October 10th and was attended by Mark Logsdon and Jim Reier.
  4. Meeting topics. Robin Hudson has solicited ideas for meeting topics from all members and will share them at the November meeting. Robin also requests ideas for the upcoming Christmas program in December.
  5. Constellation of the month for November is Taurus the bull, presented by Robin Hudson.
  6. November Refreshments. Provided by Larry Logsdon.
  7. Officer elections will occur in November for all positions: Club President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. These are 2-year terms and anyone can volunteer.
  8. Club membership cards. Mark Logsdon will research and gather quotes from area printers to replenish membership card surplus. Membership cards will be endorsed and distributed at the January meeting.

New Business

  1. Mercury Transit. Mr. Douglas Furton of the Grand Haven Tribune asked the SAAA if they were planning any community events on November 8th to cover the transit of Mercury. He intends to include them in his next newspaper column. Many thanks to Peter Burkey who replied to Mr. Furton and coordinated with the Science department at Hope College to jointly participate in a community event on November 8th.
  2. Guest Speakers. Mark Logsdon has contacted Dr. Kevin Cole of Grand Valley State University who has agreed to be a guest speaker. Dr. Cole is a specialist on meteorites and held a weekend conference in 2005 covering natural meteorites and unnatural meteorite blending. A second guest speaker is also in the works, to be announced. The availability dates for guest speakers is unknown, but strongly desired for our Jan or Feb club meetings.
  3. Great Lakes Planetarium Association. Peter Burkey has volunteered to represent the SAAA by joining the Great Lakes Planetarium Association. We recently learned about the association through Mr. Mark Perkins who conducted the planetarium training. As a member of the GLPA, we are entitled to resources such as slide-shows, audio and planetarium presentations. Senior membership dues of $10 will be reimbursed to Peter Burkey from the Club Treasury.
  4. Meeting Night. Peter Burkey acknowledged that junior SAAA members are unable to attend meetings on school nights, and proposed that monthly meetings move from Thursdays to Fridays on the 3rd week of the month. This proposal is to be put in front of the members for a vote at the November meeting.
  5. Star of Bethlehem. Peter Burkey will present a slide show on the Star of Bethlehem in December.
  6. New Members. The SAAA welcomes Yolanda Williams to the Club.
  7. December Refreshments. All club members please bring a treat for our December Christmas party.
  8. Star Party. The next star party is November 17th. Sunset at 5:20pm.
  9. Next Month’s Constellation. Need a volunteer for the next constellation of the month.

Board Minutes – October 5, 2006

Treasurer’s Report: $ 507.49

Old Business

  1. Discussion of October’s open house at the planetarium on the 19th. The theme will be “Deep Sky Objects”. I am e-mailing our contact at NASA to see if there are materials we can get from them to possibly pass out for our open house to the kids that attend. Cosmic Voyage will be shown. We will see how many people will be attending this event to see if we will need to split the group again.
  2. Constellation of the month will be Cassiopeia presented by George.
  3. Refreshment will be brought by Helmut.
  4. Mark will pay our annual fee to the State of Michigan of $20.00.

New Business

  1. Mark will be providing the refreshments for our October’s Open House.
  2. Robin will call NASA Nancy on Monday to ask when the packet will be sent for our open house. She is planning on sending materials to be passed out for the kids that attend the event.
  3. Pete is planning on getting to the Planetarium early the night of the event to make sure everything is ready for presentation.
  4. Robin will be e-mailing all club members for suggestions for topics to be discussed in future meetings. I will also ask for suggestions on what we can do for our Christmas gathering, especially for the kids that attend.
  5. Novembers Constellation of the Month will be Taurus done by Robin.
  6. Refreshments will be provided by Larry Logsdon.
  7. Election for board members will be held in November.

Old Business

  1. The Club received a thank-you letter from the Monastery for our donation of $50.00.
  2. Jim Reier will present Leo as the constellation of the month for May.
  3. Mark Logsdon will present Virgo as the constellation of the month for June
  4. The Club will sponsor a fall presentatin for Park Township on October 19th covering deep sky objects.
  5. A Club donation of $50 will be made to the International Dark Sky Association.
  6. The Executive Board voted unanimously not to file for tax exempt status with the Federal Government.
  7. George Miller will provide refreshments for the June Club meeting.

New Business

  1. In observance of National Astronomy Day, the SAAA will setup telescopes at Kollen Park following the Tulip Time fireworks display on Friday, May 5th.
  2. The Executive Board will contact Dave Zimmer of West Ottawa Public Schools concerning clutter in the Planetarium including the removal of the old console. The Club will recommend improvements to the Planetarium such as the cove lighting, electrical outlets and routing of power cords.

Board Minutes – March 30, 2006

Old Business

  1. No updates on training of the new console at the Planetarium.
  2. Pete, Jim and his wife Jennifer attended the IMAX-Roving Mars. It was a wonderful program.
  3. The Messier Marathon in March was cancelled due to mostly cloudy skies.
  4. The SAAA will host the Girl Scouts at our April meeting. A tour of the May night sky will be provided. Mark will provide a count for the number of girls in the scout troop.
  5. Constellation of the Month for April is Leo, presented by Jim Reier

New Business

  1. For the May SAAA meeting, we will view a movie from the Club library. The Executive Board will decide which title at the May board meeting.
  2. Sky & Telescope dues will be collected at the April meeting. If you are a member who wishes to receive S&T, the SAAA Club provides yearly subscriptions at a reduced price.
  3. The SAAA will host a star party for the campers at Holland State Park in July. Peter will contact HSP to arrange a date in July.
  4. The SAAA will donate $50.00 to Vivekananda Monastery for hosting our Star Parties in 2006.
  5. Constellation of the Month for May will be presented by Mark Logsdon. Refreshments will be provided by Carson Mantooth.
  6. Mark is researching the minimum contribution for International Dark Sky Association (IDA) to maintain our sponsorship status.
  7. A Fall presentation is planned for Park Township in October. The theme of the presentation will be discussed in the next meeting.
  8. Robin Hudson will submit our request to the Federal government to establish our tax-exempt status as a 501(c)(7) non-profit educational and scientific organization.
  9. Constellation of the month for June will be an extended sky tour in the planetarium.
  10. At the April SAAA meeting, Larry will present a video and demonstrate howto collimate telescopes. Members are encouraged to bring their Telescopes in to be collimated.
  11. George will provide refreshments for June.

Old Business

  1. Robin will file the SAAA with the Federal Government as a non-profit club. The name will remain “Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association”, as agreed by the board.
  2. Robin was elected to serve as Secretary for the remainder of the term. The next officer elections will occur at the November 2006 club meeting.

New Business

  1. Mark will prepare an updated list of member names, email addresses and numbers for distribution to all SAAA members.
  2. Community turn out for March 16ths open house is going to be abundant. It was decided to divide the group into two sessions. One group will watch an informative JPL video, while the other group will have a Planetarium presentation. Once the presentation is done, the groups will switch. Pete will provide snacks for this event. It was also decided to have a donation jar as well. This week, Pete and Jim will be learning how to use the up-dated Planetarium.
  3. Jim is arranging an IMAX Theater-Roving Mars movie-field trip for a Sunday Matinee on March 19th.
  4. Messier Marathon is March 24th and back up is March 25th at the Monastery.
  5. Since February’s club meeting was cancelled and the club was going to collimate telescopes, it was decided to move the collimation training to April.
  6. Mark indicated that the leader of a Girl Scout Troup is requesting training for her scouts. They have a camping trip in May and would like to learn about the constellations, etc. The SAAA is considering a private showing for this group using the Planetarium. Jim has agreed to prepare sky charts for this event.
  7. In May the group will be viewing a video.
  8. LEAP Program. The SAAA will present a program at the Planetarium or an outdoor show for the LEAP group.

  1. Membership Dues: Please have all dues paid at the next club meeting.
  2. February’s Club meeting will be collimating telescopes, by Larry and Terry for members.
  3. Schedule to Monastery-Jim Reier
  4. Mark Logsdon looked into a guest speaker from GVSU for May’s meeting, but was unable to contact professor.

New Business

  1. Tax exempt status needs to be filed with the Federal Government, which I(Robin) will be looking at getting for the club. Discussion of the club name to stay the same or should be filed as Holland Astronomy Club.
  2. Terry to provide February’s refreshments.
  3. Pete will call Lois Yonker at West Ottawa Schools about the Planetarium. Discussion of a tentative club board meeting at the Planetarium for March, if it is done, to look over and try it out. If the Planetarium is not done, then a slide presentation will be done for the open house that is scheduled in March for the public.
  4. Telescope Workshop-Pete will call Robert to see how their group’s workshop went at the Air Zoo. This was the night before we attended the Air Zoo on Saturday. This may give our club the insight of possibly doing a workshop. We will also have to look at when would be a good time to have it and where. Commitment from club members in doing it
  5. February’s club meeting will also hold a special election to elect me (Robin) or someone else for the Secretary’s position.

Old Business

  1. 2006 membership dues ($20) to be collected at the January 19th Club meeting.
  2. George Miller met with Holland Public Library and requested permission to setup a telescope workshop on May 6th (Nat’l Astronomy Day). The library is willing to house our workshop, but not on May 6th because that’s the start of Tulip Time. The Club will discuss a new workshop date at the January meeting.
  3. The Club was informed that the planetarium upgrade would occur during January. Jim Reier will contact Dave Zimmer to arrange planetarium training.
  4. January 21st Field Trip to Kalamazoo Air-Zoo
    1. Members must RSVP to Robin Hudson no later than Monday 1/16/06.
    2. Please identify all members in your party. Be sure to indicate number of children ages 15 years or younger and seniors over the age of 60.
    3. Robin Hudson will purchase tickets online on 1/17/06. Participants are asked to reimburse Robin at the January 19th SAAA Club Meeting or on the day of the field trip. Robin will email each member to advise on the amount of reimbursement (as our discount will be determined by number of guests).
    4. We will meet and group at the Air-Zoo at 10:00am. Tickets will be distributed upon your arrival.
    5. We will break for lunch at the Kitty-Hawk Café located inside the Air-Zoo.

New Business

  1. Upcoming SAAA meetings:
    1. January 19th - Membership dues collected followed by Quiz Bowl.
    2. February 16th - Collimating telescope tutorial (performed on 4.5″ and 6″ Club scopes and member scopes.)
    3. March 16th - Park Township night, power-point and planetarium presentations of our Solar System
    4. April 20th - DVD Video recently received by Jet Propulsion Labs (JPL).
    5. May 18th - Guest speaker (to be announced).
  2. Jim Reier will forward this year’s observing schedule to Vivekanada Monastery.
  3. Pete Burkey will contact Holland Parks/Recreation to request permission to setup telescopes at Kollen Park on Saturday, May 6th (Nat’l Astronomy Day). Note; this night is the Tulip Time fireworks show.
  4. Mark Logsdon to contact/arrange a guest speaker (GVSU Prof.?) for our May 18th club meeting.
  5. Mark Logsdon to forward active member list to Pete, Jim and Robin.
  6. Jim Reier proposed the Club solicit donations at public events as a way to fund proceeds that go towards the Int’l Dark Sky Association and other valued charities/services.
  7. Mark Logsdon to produce a copy of the Non-Profit Organization filing with the State of Michigan that identifies the SAAA Non-Profit identification number.
  8. Robin Hudson volunteered to consult with a friend who is a CPA about legalities governing the acceptance of donations, and to investigate state and federal laws for non-profit organizations.

  • Mark Logsdon will do a presentation regarding the Chinese space program for the November meeting.
  • December meeting – Pete Burkey will do a short presentation on the Star Of Bethlehem. The annual club Christmas party will follow.
  • Feb and/or March, 2006 – Park Township presentation. Jim Reier will contact Park Township.
  • ODC public star party was held Oct. 25th. Six members were in attendance with scopes.
  • Business cards have been printed and were given to Board members. Cards will be available for all members at the November meeting.

New Business:

  • November – Mark will cover status of the Chinese space program.
  • December – Pete will do a short program on the Star of Bethlehem followed by the club’s Christmas party.

Carson will contact Herrick District Library to determine if subscription exists for Sky & Telescope as the subscriber. Carson will also check out a subscription to Night Sky.

Extensive discussion continued this month concerning gaining new members and retaining old members. The following will be done.

  • Pete Burkey – contact members from 2004 membership list.
  • Conduct a clinic on “telescope basics” prior to the Christmas season. Session would be held at ODC. Mark Logsdon will contact ODC to determine if this is feasible.
  • Contact Riders Hobby Shop and invite them to the “telescope basics” seminar. Pete Burkey will make this contact.

  • Discussions of methods of increasing club membership continue and Pete Burkey is working on this.
  • During the September Jim Reier suggested ways of improving the SAAA web page. More to follow in upcoming months.
  • Program plans for 2006 had previous discussion and are covered under “new business.”
  • Observing night is scheduled for November 4th.

Outdoor Discovery Center public observing night has been confirmed as Monday, October 24th with observing beginning at 7:30 PM.

Our membership list needs updating. If you have changed e-mail address, phone number, etc. please let a board member know ASAP. If possible let us know at the October meeting.

Larry Logsdon has designed a club business card and a proof will be available at the November meeting.

Old Business:

  • Holland State Park observing night went over very well. Good skies and many campers visited, learned, and observed
  • The school board has approved the planetarium upgrade. Between $25,000 - $30,000 was approved
  • Approved, each month a portion of the monthly meeting will be devoted to astronomy history
  • SAAA received a certificate from NASA for SAAA using NASA articles in the newsletter. Peter has acquired a frame for the certificate and it will be placed in the planetarium

New Business:

  • Board spent considerable time discussing methods of increasing membership. Web site was discussed and Jim and Carson are working on the site to get it updated. Thanks guys!
  • Discussion held regarding program schedule for 2005-06
  • Mark Logsdon provided master of the SAAA brochure and Larry Logsdon provided copies for membership

New Business:

  • Sky and Telescope dues subscription has been paid. Mark Logsdon noted the wrong expiration date on the mailing label and called S&T. Members, please check your July issue to be sure the correct date is shown
  • June 20th school board meeting will review and hopefully vote in favor of repairing and/or upgrading the planetarium
  • Approved SAAA again begin with the “constellation of the month.” Peter will do the September constellation

  • Planetarium status - school administration is in the process of negotiating to get equipment repaired/updated
  • Logo status - Terry and his wife continue to work out details concerning number of stitches for the logo

New Business:

  • April meeting will be April 21st. Robert Wade will be speaking to us about his February travels to the Florida Star Party
